Journeys in Uganda - Day 5 - Part 1
First stop was the Uganda Martyrs Museum. In 1875 the King invited British missionary's from the Christian Missionary Society to bring the gospel to the people of Uganda. But when the King died, his son did not want the missionaries there. He commanded they renounce God. They did not and were murdered. 13 Catholic and 12 Anglicans were executed (This is the Anglican Memorial, the RC memorial is down the street).
Christians were drug on their backs for miles, dismembered and then burned to make sure they wouldn't resurrect.
Our guide shared that throughout their torture and sufferings, they praised the Lord. Pictured is the Torture Tree where the burnings took place. The ceiling fresco depicts the angels in heaven receiving the victims into eternal life.
Annually on June 3 there is a memorial. Millions of people pilgrimage to Uganda for Martyrs Day for the many many Christian's who were killed. They come from distances of 300-400 KM to gather to remember the Christian martyrs. In 2024 Archbishop Foley Beach was the keynote speaker. This year the Church of Uganda Archbishop, His Grace Steven Samuel will be speaking.
